Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR)
Water is often available in short periods of time. Rainwater storage can be a solution. During periods of rain, water can be stored underground to be re-used in a later period, when water is scarce. HDDW can be used to infiltrate and later extract this water with a stable water quality.
Underground water storage
An aquifer is an underground layer in which groundwater is present. This underground layer consists of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials such as gravel, sand, or silt. An HDDW then enables both water infiltration and water extraction from these aquifers. This form of water storage has already proven its value and efficiency for municipal, industry and agriculture use to provide water of sufficient quality and quantity throughout the year.
HDDW for aquifer recharge
Groundwater recharge is the process where rainwater infiltrates from surface water to groundwater. This (rain)water infiltration can occur in a natural way as well as through an artificial process of infiltration by a filter pipe. Aquifer recharge makes sure that rainwater or recycled water of good quality is pumped to the subsurface to keep the aquifer filled and suitable for use in the future. When the water is needed again, the water can be extracted with a stable and good quality. HDDW is yet again a perfect method for the installation of the filter pipe in the desired aquifer. High capacity with relatively few facilities makes the (rain)water storage system easy to maintain and reduces the installation and maintenance costs. The HDDW technology has been developed in association with the drinking water industry. Extensive research has led to a unique technique that, in many situations, offers great advantages over the conventional methods.
